Experts Agree That Soda Is One Of The Most Harmful Beverages

When we become parched, it’s easy to turn to a nice cold soda that is filled with sugar, caffeine, sweeteners and high amounts of calories. It’s refreshing and will quench your thirst, but is it doing any positive favors to your body? I had the pleasure of speaking to Dr. James Gerber, Associate Professor of Clinical Sciences at Western States Chiropractic College (WSCC) in Portland, Oregon, who serves on the adjunct faculty of the University of Bridgeport Nutrition Institute and the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, regarding the soda beverage.

The first question I asked Dr. Gerber was what he thought the biggest danger soda poses to the body. He answered:”The biggest danger is the calories, soda drinks are a significant contributor to the obesity epidemic.” Dr. Gerber would be correct in his hypothesis; according to a 20-year study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, men and women who increased their sugary drink intake by one 12-ounce serving per day gained more weight over time. For the study, 120,877 U.S. men and women who did not have any chronic diseases or obesity were evaluated from 1986 to 2006. Each participant was evaluated based on their lifestyle factors and weight change every four years. Results showed that every four years, participants gained an average of 3.35 lb and sugar-sweetened beverages contributed to 1 lb of that average weight.

I mentioned this study to Dr. Gerber and I asked him what weight gain and soda have in common with each other. He mentioned: “Liquid calories are easy to overdo compared to calories from solid food.” After he mentioned this I thought, could there be other negative aspects to overdrinking soda? According to Rochelle Rosian, MD, there could be a connection between brittle bones and soda beverages, the Cleveland Clinic reports. Dr. Rosian explains that one of the reasons there could be an association is because most soda beverages contain phosphoric acid, which has the ability to leach calcium out of our bones. Also, the caffeine intake in these beverages has been linked to osteoporosis. However, there is still not enough evidence to make a definitive claim on this.

Many assessments and studies are coming from the Framingham Osteoporosis Research BMD. One assessment consisted of 1413 females and 1125 men in 2006. Researchers discovered that consuming soda actually decreased the BMD significantly for women. In addition, Linda K. Massey, Ph.D., RD, a professor of human nutrition at Washington State University, mentioned to WebMD: “Excess phosphorus promotes calcium loss from the body when calcium intake is low.”

After discussing this study, I asked Dr. Gerber what amount of soda would he recommend to someone who consumes high caffeinated soda beverages. He answered, “I would recommend that they drink zero amounts, but if it’s become a habit, I would say 8 ounces would be alright as long as it’s supported by a healthy diet.” One of the reasons Dr. Gerber said zero is because of a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study tracked the health of about 90,000 women over two decades. Researchers found that women who consumed two servings of sugary beverages a day had a 40% higher risk of heart attacks or death from heart disease than women who rarely drank sugary beverages.

Emilyfrost/shutterstock.com

Another reason Dr. Gerber was extremely against people consuming sugary beverages that are high in caffeine is because of the association with diabetes. A study published in the journal Jama set out to discover if there was an association between the two. So researchers conducted a cohort analysis from 1991 to 1999 among women who were in the Nurses’ Health Study ll. The diabetes analysis included over 91,000 women who were free from diabetes and other chronic diseases in 1991. The results showed that women who had a stable consumption pattern of sugar-sweetened beverages saw no weight gain, but the weight gain over a 4-year period was highest among women who increased their sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption from one or fewer per week to one or more per day.

Those who are looking to stop drinking soda and eliminate it from their diet might want to replace it with water. The Harvard School of Public Health states that water helps restore fluid lost through breathing, metabolism, sweating, and when waste is removed. Not only will it quench your thirst, but it will hydrate your body and reduce the risk of becoming fatigued. The Institute of Medicine says that an adequate intake of water per day is 125 ounces (15 cups) for men and 91 ounces (11 cups) for women.

Man’s Facebook Post Goes Viral After An Elderly Customer Unexpectedly Passed Him A Note

Farris Leonard is from Burgar, North Carolina, and it was on Facebook where he wrote about a heartwarming encounter he had with a 93-year-old gentleman. It was on July 30, 2017 when he visited a Lanes Ferry Dock & Grill where he ordered a burger and chanced upon the older man. In the Facebook post, which soon went viral, he wrote: ‘today I went to Lane’s Ferry Grill to eat lunch. Great staff and food. I needed a real bacon cheeseburger. The place was packed.’

He went on to say that as he was waiting alone for his order an older man pointed at an empty seat next to him, non verbally asking if he could sit down. Farris wrote: ‘I replied sure. He was filling out his order sheet and one of the staff came to say to me that the gentleman communicated by passing notes because he couldn’t hear or speak well. They asked if he could sit there. I responded we had already worked that out.’

The former firefighter continued his Facebook post by explaining how the two men passed notes back and forth and eventually filled the entirety of the old man’s paper. Farris found out that the man was actually 93 years old and had ‘seen’ things. He wrote: ‘as we sat and passed notes, we filled up both sides of his paper, I only wondered the things he had seen. Well he met JFK, in the ’40s he went to Arizona and it was 120 degrees. Yes, we wrote about the weather. What a great lunch!’

As their orders arrived and Farris was about to leave, he wrote back to the man, ‘“Sir I want to thank you for sharing lunch with me. I must go now but I want you to know that you made my day a better day. Take care of yourself.” You should have seen his eyes and smile as he read it. He embraced his heart and gave me a handshake that was real. We hugged and took a picture.’

Facebook / Lane’s Ferry Dock & Grill

Farris explained how while this encounter may have been ‘insignificant’ to some people, just sitting down and showing a little bit of compassion can go a long way at times. ‘I tell this story that may seem insignificant, only to share just how significant it was. As I sat there I wondered if and hoped that I was making a better day for this 93-year-young gentleman. This story is not about what I did but about what we all can do. With a little time, a lot of compassion and not being about “me” and “I’” so much, we could help make and be in a better place. Passing notes with this gentleman was priceless.’

Facebook / Farris Leonard

Farris’ Facebook post has since been liked more than 800 times and been shared more than a hundred times. Many people applauded the kind heart, empathy, compassion, and patience that he displayed towards this older gentleman. Thirumalai Thirupuvanam wrote: ‘just saw this, what a great story! So happy you got to meet him!’ Samp Hudson Jr. wrote: ‘he probably was a WWII veteran! I love meeting those guys!’

A woman by the name of Shelby Rozga commented on a Facebook group, Love What Matters, which featured Farris’ story and said: ‘I work here at Lanes Ferry Dock & Grill and the older man, Mr. Eddy, comes in every single Friday! He is the sweetest man you could ever meet and will always put a smile on your face. It is so sweet when strangers come and sit with him and they write conversations and leave as friends! There are some wonderful people in this world.’

Doctor Shows How Pregnant Women Can Dance Away Their Labor Pain

Anyone who’s been in labor knows it’s no walk in the park. Different women have different ways of coping with contractions and dealing with all the pain that leads up to actually giving birth. Some ask for a ton of drugs to numb the pain, others just latch on to their partner’s arm and let them share just a bit of that pain. Just a bit. But one doctor is trying something new to relieve women from their excruciating experience. Meet Brazilian doctor Fernando Guedes da Cunha.

Instagram @drfernandoguedescunha

Dr. Cunha supports this method with his medical experience in order to convince mothers-to-be to take him seriously and to actually try it out for themselves. So you are probably wondering what exactly this method is. Well, it’s dancing. The doctor has posted videos and photos of himself leading a dance routine with pretty pregnant women to some of the songs that they love.

He turned to his Instagram to post all these photos and videos and it looks like these women are having a blast! In fact, they barely look like they are in any pain. Dr. Cunha wrote on his Instagram, “Dance, walk, activities with a ball of physiotherapy and squats, are part of the patient’s verticalization, which greatly favors labor. We are increasingly trying to implement human measures to improve assistance to pregnant women.” Dr. Cunha first got discovered after he posted a video of himself dancing to Despacito along with a patient at the hospital he works at, Unimed Vitoria.

Again, you can’t believe that this woman is about to give birth when you see her do all that smiling and moving! According to Cunha, the moves that these women are doing are proven to reduce pain during labor and generally make giving birth way easier. The dance routines typically consist of squats, hip movements, and shimmies.

Instagram @drfernandoguedescunha

Dr. Cunha wrote in one of his captions on Instagram (translated from Spanish), “You come to work and your patient goes into labor! She asks for the music, we invent the choreography at the time so that the exercises help the childbirth.” It sounds absurd but it works, according to the doctor. More than that, it makes the time of labor fly by. Just imagine dancing to your favorite song and bam! Time for the baby to arrive.

INSTAGRAM @drfernandoguedescu

According to a 1998 study in the The New England Journal of Medicine, dancing helps relax the muscles. This results in helping the baby descend way easier and get into the best position for birth. More and more hospitals are sharing the belief of this doctor. The New England Journal also notes that women who walked or moved around during had shorter labors. Sounds like a win-win if you ask me.

In another study done in Nursing Research in 2003, the more that women in labor lied down and stayed still, the more they were prone to back pain. According to Dr. Regina Kaplan, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Ocean Medical Center, the whole point is for the baby to move through the birth canal, so the more mommy moves, the more she’s helping out her baby to move. She adds, “It will help shift the pressure of the baby pressing on maternal skeletal structures and organs.” Check out the video of Dr. Fernando Guedes da Cunha dancing with some of the mommies-to-be! It might even get you to dance as well.

Here Are The Names Of Your Baby’s Future Classmates

Nowadays names can be rather unique. With celebrity babies such as Chicago and Blue Ivy, it’s no wonder that the most popular names for babies have changed over the last year, let alone the last decade and the last century. Or have they? According to the United States Social Security government website, the most popular boy name of 2017 was Liam while the most popular girl name was Emma.

Shutterstock

Names such as Noah, William, James, Logan, Benjamin, Mason, Elijah, Oliver and Jacob rounded out the top ten for the boys in that order. For girls, it was Olivia, Ava, Isabella, Sophia, Mia, Charlotte, Amelia, Evelyn and Abigail, who all finished after the name Emma.

The Social Security Administration or the SSA has been tracking the most popular baby names in the United States since the 1880’s according to Business Insider. According to that article, the name Michael, for example, first entered the list of most popular names in the 1940s, and quickly became the most popular boy’s name in America. It held the number-one spot for four straight decades from the 1960s to the 1990s, slipped to number two in the 2000s, and fell completely off the list for the current decade.

Another name that was popular in history but is now experiencing a ‘resurgence’ is the name ‘Emma.’ When this data was first recorded, Emma was in the top ten for most popular girl’s name but after the 1890’s the name ‘Emma’ didn’t make the top ten again for more than a century! Only in the 2000s did that name experience a ‘rise in popularity’ and became a staple in the top ten once again.

Shutterstock

In an article done by verywellfamily.com, they tried to explain the popularity behind the name “Emma” by asking: why does a name that dates back several centuries (Emma of Normandy was a Viking queen of England in the year 1002) appeal to so many modern parents as the choice for their baby girl? They believe that its history and meaning are the answer to this question. Emma is a name that has references in literature, film, poetry, and art. This timelessness ensures that it will continue to be one of the most beloved baby names for many centuries to come.

Shutterstock

The article went on to explain how the Germanic origin of the name “Emma” comes from “ermen” which means ‘whole’ or ‘universal.’ The name “Emma” was supposed to mark the beginning or origin of a new daughter. The name then grew in popularity in Matthew Prior’s 1709 poem Henry and Emma and continued to stay popular. The article continued to explain that “Emma” began to slowly climb the charts starting in 1977, finally cracking the top 100 names in 1992. After that, the name skyrocketed in popular culture and shot into stratospheric levels after Ross and Rachel named their baby Emma in Friends, back in 2002.

However, an interesting fact to consider is that babies in the United States are more likely to have unique names than any other nation. A study that analyzed Social Security naming data published in Journal of Applied Social Psychology, found that American babies are the least likely population to share names with their peers.

5. Whole Grains: A Tufts University study proved that people who eat three or more daily servings of whole grains, such as oatmeal, had 10 percent less belly fat than people who ate the same amount of white carbs. 7. Cayenne Pepper: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition performed a study that found that daily consumption of one of the compounds found in pepper speeds up abdominal fat loss. It does this by boosting the body’s ability to convert food into energy. Next time you’re cooking, add some cayenne pepper to spice up some meat or vegetarian dishes.

Pexels
8. Salmon: A 2015 study from Kyoto University found that salmon helps your body transform fatty white fat cells into fat-burning beige cells. Salmon helps build muscle, with a steady workout routine, and contains the right types of fats, such as Omega-3s, which helps your body burn more fat.

10. Apples and Pears: Research was posted on the US National Library of Medicine in 2003 stating the results of a study by the State University of Rio de Janeiro on a correlation between apples, pears, and weight loss. Women were instructed to eat apples, pears, or oatmeal cookies three times a day. After 12 weeks the group that had a fruit supplement lost more weight and had a greater decrease in blood glucose than the group that ate the oatmeal cookies.

Pexels
11. Chicken: A 2013 study in the medical journal Obesity found that boosting dietary protein decreases total body fat and abdominal fat but helps increase lean body mass and your body’s energy expenditure during periods of weight maintenance and weight loss.

Pexels
12. Spinach: A study done by the journal Hormones states that eating three cups of spinach a week can speed up weight loss by 10 percent. Author of the study Petya Kamenova, M.D says that spinach has a lot of lipoic acid, which is a compound that helps block sugar from getting into blood cells. This causes the sugar to be used for energy instead of being stored as fat.

Pexels

13. Whey Protein: A study posted to the US National Library of Medicine found that whey protein supplements increase fat loss and help develop lean muscle. The study had subjects take Prolibra which is a whey protein supplement, and subjects taking Prolibra lost 6.1% of their body fat mass.

Pexels
14. Eggs: A 2018 report from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) stated that eating more protein for breakfast can help fat loss. It is recommended to have 25 grams of protein in your breakfast to speed up your metabolism and stave off cravings. One way to get protein into your breakfast is by eating eggs and changing them up daily so it never gets boring.

Pexels

15. Milk: A 2007 study conducted by McMaster University states that if you want to burn fat, drinking milk is the way to do it. The study had two groups of people, one who drank regular milk, and the other who drank soy milk. The milk drinking group came out on top in terms of muscle gain with an estimated 40 percent or 2.5 pounds more muscle mass than the soy beverage drinkers. It’s important to gain muscle because it’s our muscles that help us lose fat.

Pexels
16. Beans: A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine journal found that eating more beans improved blood sugar control and slashed heart disease risk for patients with type 2 diabetes. Beans also contain good plant-based proteins that will keep you fuller for longer.

Pexels
17. Purple Sweet Potatoes: According to a review published in Biomedical and Environmental Sciences in 2015 sweet potatoes are rich in resistant starch which helps reduce the risk of obesity.

Pexels
18. Mustard: If you are someone who loves to cook or use mustard as a condiment good news is coming your way. Scientists from Oxford Brookes University claim that mustard can increase your calorie burn by 20 percent.

Pixabay
19. Ginger: A study published in 2012 in the Metabolism journal found that ginger has a thermogenic effect by enhancing the thermic effect of food as well as promoting feelings of satiety. This means that when you eat ginger, it raises the temperature of your body and helps speed up your metabolism.

Pexels
20. Water: A study published by the US National Library of Medicine and conducted by Simon N. Thornton found that water can be associated with weight loss. Water shuttles nutrients throughout our body and helps rid it of toxins. It helps to assimilate the water-soluble vitamins, and it regulates our body temperature.

Pexels
21. Olive Oil: The next time you’re cooking something in a pan, try making it with olive oil rather than butter or margarine. A Mediterranean diet study lead by Dr. Ramon Estruch of the University of Barcelona found that there is a link between olive oil and fat loss. The group that was assigned a Mediterranean diet with added olive oil had a slightly smaller increase in waist size than the low-fat diet group.

Pexels
22. Green Tea: A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition states that green tea has been shown to activate the body’s thermogenic fat-burning activity. In this study, people who had taken 690 mg of catechins, which is present in green tea, for 12 weeks, reduced the subjects’ total fat area and waist circumference.

Pexels
23. Coffee: A study published on the US National Library of Medicine website studied the dietary habits of more than 93,000 people, those who drank more coffee had a lower risk of obesity and a decreased risk of type two diabetes. It is said that adding milk, cream or sugar to your coffee doesn’t have the same effect as drinking it black.

Pexels
24. Tomato Juice: In a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers found that drinking 11 oz of tomato juice for 20 days lowered systemic inflammation in overweight women. This is thought to be because tomato juice increases adiponectin which is a protein that helps break down body fat.

Pexels
25. Soybeans: Dr. David Allison and Dr. Mark Cope at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Dr. John Erdman at the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana conducted a study on soy and obesity. The researchers found that soyfoods are equal to other protein sources, such as dairy or meat, when it comes to fat loss.

Man Finds ‘Rusty Metal Box’ With Approximately $21,000 Of Cash And Jewelry Inside

Matthew Emanuel experienced what would be universally defined as a once in a lifetime dream come true. One can only suppose how unimaginable it would be to unearth a treasure box hidden right in the backyard of your home, but that’s just what happened to the Staten Island resident.

YouTube / Eyewitness NEWS ABC7NY

This was an average sunny day, and Emanuel was determined to take initiative and finish up some garden work. The bottoms of the trees on his property had been chewed up by deer, so he’d decided it was time to replace them with bamboo. “With the heavy snow we got this winter, a lot of them were falling down, they were top heavy,” he explained to the Staten Island Advance.

A large receptacle made from metal, which was covered in rust, was buried behind bushes along his fence. Emanuel had noticed this strange object sitting stagnant behind the trees during his four years as a proprietor but assumed it was just an old cable box, according to ABC News. “I thought it had something to do with electricity or something,” Emanuel admitted to the Advance. As contractors began working, they offered their services, asking if he needed help prying the box open. Before they attempted anything, he tried shaking it but couldn’t hear anything. Once they unbolted the case, they discovered it was, in fact, a safe, and they were shocked.

What they found was roughly $21,000 worth of treasure. Jewelry, diamonds and soggy stacks of one-hundred dollar bills filled the long-forgotten container. I thought we found a buried treasure,” he told the Advance. “We were freaked out,” he said. “It’s something you can’t make up.” He estimated the value of the articles were around $16,000, and the cash could be somewhere around $5,000. “It was unbelievable,” he told ABC News. “It’s like a dream come true.”

Twitter / @tvnewsindia

Emanuel also spotted a small case locked amidst the treasure. Though there was no name on it, there was an address. After doing some research online, Emanuel discovered that the address in question belonged to a building in Brooklyn, which was owned, coincidentally, by a couple that lived just a few of doors down from his place.

Twitter / @tvnewsindia

“We realized it must have been them, so Monday morning I walked on over to their house and knocked on their door,” Emanuel said to the Advance. “I asked them if they’d ever been robbed.” Shockingly, they shared the story of a person they’ve dubbed the “ninja burglar,” that had managed to rip the safe from their wall seven years back. When they called the police, the thief ran away. His neighbors and the police investigating at the time thought they’d lost their belongings forever.

In Emanuel’s opinion, the robber must have tossed the box over the fence and bolted, he told ABC News. “They were pretty stunned,” he said of their reaction when he told them the news of his findings. Emanuel rightfully returned the newfound riches to their original family and called it a day. This story, though shockingly coincidental, really proves that just about anything can happen.

Woman Follows 3 Simple Rules From Nutritionist In Order To Lose 150 Pounds

Losing weight is tough but when you weigh over 300 pounds, whether it be male or female, that fitness journey to shed all that fat can become an arduous and monumental hurdle to overcome. But despite the inherent mental and physical toll that it requires to lose over 150 pounds, Amanda ‘Mandie’ Wood was able to accomplish her goal. It was in the fall of 2015 when she decided to change her life around.

In an interview with Popsugar, Amanda said: ‘there honestly wasn’t any ‘aha’ moment. I just got tired of feeling invisible all the time. One thing that I don’t think a lot of people realize is the larger you are, the more invisible you are to others.’

At the time, Mandie was 35 years old and weighed over 375 pounds. She was a size 28 at the time and more than two years later, and armed with the three tips that her nutritionist gave her, Mandie was able to shed over 150 pounds at 37 years old! Amanda said that a family doctor referred her to a nutritionist and this nutritionist offered her three tips. The first is portion size: determining the appropriate portion size for your needs. The second is: how to lower your caloric intake, and finally the third is to combine those two tips into an adherable and sustainable eating habit.

Amanda said: ‘I follow balanced macros, which for me means that I try to ensure I am getting 35 percent of my calories from carbs, 25 percent of my calories from fat, and 40 percent of my calories from protein.’ Macros simply mean macronutrients and there are four: protein, fat, carbohydrates and alcohol. Amanda said that a typical day of eating for her would involve eggs and oatmeal for breakfast, a protein shake for a midday snack, a chicken caesar salad or turkey meatballs for lunch and some lean protein and veggies for her dinner. She also said that she implements greek yogurts, fruits, and pepperoni sticks as snacks throughout the day sometimes.

Instagram / mandiestransformation

In terms of her physical activity, Amanda said: ‘to be honest, I had tried the gym a few times before and just never felt comfortable. I didn’t enjoy working out and felt that everyone was judging me, so I always ended up quitting.’ She admitted that she started taking the gym seriously after losing the initial 60 to 70 pounds and then she hired a personal trainer to help her out.

Instagram / mandiestransformation

Amanda said: ‘I ended up hiring a personal trainer, which was a great investment. She was able to show me lots of different bodyweight exercises, teach me proper form for different exercises, and overall just gave me so much more confidence in going to the gym. Now going to the gym is one of my favorite times of the week — I love pushing myself to try new things and heavier weights!’

On her Instagram where Amanda documents her fitness journey she showcases her exercises at the gym, her daily meals and a hearty amount of inspirational and motivational quotes. She said that the tips the nutritionist gave her really helped her build a healthy eating lifestyle. ‘I will go out for drinks with friends or have a grilled cheese for lunch if that’s what I want to do, but I won’t do it every day. I can indulge within reason without throwing my goals completely off track.’

20 Moments All Guys With Short Girlfriends Will Understand

How’s the weather down there, shorty? Ha ha ha, I’m just kidding. We absolutely love it when you’re shorter than us ladies, and, from what I’ve heard from the women in my life, they like it when we’re taller too. It could be because we feel more protective towards something smaller than us, or maybe it’s because it looks better in pictures, but either way, it’s nice.

However, there are some disadvantages to having a short girlfriend. From always having to reach the top shelf to having you stand on our feet when we dance, these things can be both good and bad. Sure, our feet may hurt after weddings, but it’s nice to be needed by someone for our physicality. Especially if you’re a hunchbacked, sweaty, Sasquatch-looking being like myself.

So, let’s jump in together and see the ways a short girlfriend can be advantageous or disadvantageous. Hey, maybe you’ll recognize a couple of situations here! And if you don’t, then, my good sir [tips fedora and raises my glass of Mountain Dew in your direction], I’ll see you on /pol/, my fellow incel. Wait, am I allowed to say incel? Does NEET work? Whatever, see you on the internet my fellow hunchbacked, sweaty, Sasquatch looking-being.

1. Her best friend is one of these suckers. Then again, if they get a step ladder then they wouldn’t need our tall, lanky bodies anymore. Get rid of all the step ladders! Burn the heretics!

Instagram

2. When she borrows one of your sweaters, it looks more like a dress. Hey, they look great to us in anything, especially our clothes. Maybe it’s a narcissistic thing? I wouldn’t look too much into it.

Twitter
3. What? Who has an adjustable shower like that? Aren’t they usually fixed? I find the hardest part of showering with your significant other is getting her to share the hot water…seriously ladies why are you such shower hogs?

Twitter

4. Whenever you take pictures it always comes out like this, if you’re a terrible photographer. Don’t people realize they can take pictures at an angle, or do you need an $8,000 film degree to know that?

Twitter
5. Sometimes, you can make fun of her size, but not all the time. Remember, she can return the favor and it will be a lot more painful when SHE does it. Trust me, I get it a lot, it does not feel good.

Imgur
6. You never drive her car, because THIS will happen. Then again, I’ve never in my life dated a girl who actually owned a car and I only know two who own one. And one of them is my mom.

7. You lose her in Ikea all the time and she’s always getting stuck in wacky places. What? How did you manage to get caught in the crawl space? Alright, jeez, I’ll call the fire department or should I just go get the vaseline again?

Piximus
8. She makes the best armrest. Just post her up next to the TV, have her stand perfectly still and rest away. Hey, if you give her a really flat hat you could probably rest your beer on her head, too!

Twitter

9. At concerts or events, you can never stand in front of her. What do you mean what just happened, it was some of the sickest pyrotechnics—Oh, that’s right. Trust me, it was REALLY cool!

Twitter
10. So, you put her on your back and have her there for the remainder of the concert. Hey honey, is everything alright? (audible back cracks) No honey, it’s fine, I’ll be a paraplegic for the rest of my life, but at least you’re enjoying J-Cole!

Instagram
11. She always gets caught in places. One day, you’ll come home from work and find your girlfriend hanging from a door handle or something. Maybe if you leave her there for a while, she’ll learn not to wear loose clothing.

12. Recognize this? Weddings, dances, hoe-downs, impromptu midnight dance sessions at lover’s peak to the tune of “Dancing in the Moonlight”, during all these situations, your short girlfriend may have to stand on your toes.

Twitter
13. Then again, if you’re a soccer player, you could just have your girlfriend stand on your ball to kiss her. I am a North American, not a European or South American, so I go nowhere near soccer. You silly, backward entire rest of the world, don’t know the difference between real football (a sport that you play with your feet, hence the name, and which absolutely makes no sense as the name for a handball-leather-egg sport), and soccer. And you call us uncultured!

Twitter
14. You’re always stuck holding the umbrella. And it’s always at a weird angle, too. Like, you’ve got to get both your heads so you put it up high, then she gets all wet so you put it lower but you smack yourself in the face and it’s like this whole thing. Ugh.

Instagram

15. This is her point of view when you’re six foot or over. Jeez, you look like you’re towering over her, that must be terrifying! Fe Fi Fo Fum, I spell the blood of my short girlfriend! You look like the kind of guy Hulk Hogan would have a hard time body slamming. Okay, I think I’m out of giant jokes now.

Twitter
16. This is what it looks like to hug her. There was a joke that people use to tell back in high school that girls who are small are a perfect size. Perfect size because they are so adorable when they hugged you! What were YOU thinking?

Instagram

17. Seriously, what is with people and being so inept with photography? Haven’t we all had phones for so long we can understand how to take a proper selfie? Then again, there are so many different angles that are unflattering, maybe that’s the only one where she looks good. And trust me, in photos it is literally all about the girl.

Twitter
18. Every tall guy needs a short girl. Then again, short guys and tall girls need love too. Hey, maybe we can set up a dating service for all those who don’t fall into the tall guy or short girl bracket. We can call it SizR or something. It’s a working title, but somebody get Silicon Valley on the phone. TJ Miller? Are you too busy calling in fake bomb threats every time a woman rejects you? I promise I’ll only rip on you for the Emoji Movie a couple times!

Twitter

19. Wait, they have counters they can stand on? That’s it, no more counters and step ladders. All I have is my height and my car, do you really think my girlfriend would be with me for my looks or personality? No way!

Twitter
20. That’s much better. Yes, suffer in your shortness. We are all you’ll ever need in terms of height and for reaching stuff. We’re all you’ll ever need for anything.

Woman Saves Her Own Life With Stunning 231 Pound Weight Loss Transformation

Heather Oset is a hairstylist from New Jersey and she got the scare of her life when she experienced chest pain and heart palpitations while working on a client. Trying to work through it, she soon found it impossible and had to have her husband drive her to the hospital. At the time she weighed more than 350 pounds. The hairstylist at Dolce Salon & Spa in Millburn, New Jersey, wrote to Inspire More about her terrifying experience: ‘I remember feeling so embarrassed as they were literally taking my clothes off and putting all these wires and EKGs and I’m half naked in front of everyone. I felt like I hit rock bottom and all these thoughts in my head of, “Oh my gosh, I’m going to die,” and “I’m too young to die.”’ Heather says it was this experience that made her realize it was time for a change.

Heather says it wasn’t a heart attack but just a way for her body to fight back after all the abuse and damage it had endured. Heather revealed that her poor eating habits began when she was just a child. In her article, she told Goodfullness: ‘My father was abusive and anytime something bad happened, I would run to the fridge and would eat whatever hostess cakes, snacks, pies, or cookies I could find, because they were his and I guess in my head that was my way of fighting back when I physically couldn’t. I never really talked about it to anyone. I just felt embarrassed and ashamed, so instead, I would just eat my feelings and would continue to do so over the years.’

Heather went on to explain that her poor eating habits continued into adulthood where they only worsened. She explained how she would regularly skip breakfast and just have a massive lunch along with takeout for dinner. In an interview with Goodfullness, she said: ‘I would never eat breakfast and then I would eat whatever I wanted for lunch. Whole sub sandwiches, pizza, Chinese, you name it because in my head I thought oh I didn’t eat breakfast, so I can eat whatever I wanted for lunch. Also, was a huge soda drinker, basically would have soda all day long.’

Heather also wanted to have kids after she got married in 2014 but doctors revealed that it would be impossible until she lost the weight. She was also extremely close to becoming a diabetic and all the extra weight that she put on left her with severe back and leg pain on top of sleep apnea. So Heather decided to consult a bariatric surgeon in order to get some assistance in her weight loss journey.

Bariatric surgery is the shrinking of the stomach, but before the surgery could be safely performed, Heather had to lose twenty pounds. She wrote: ‘I cut out all soda, made my lunch, and drank protein shakes for breakfast in the morning.’ She finally had the surgery in January and she stated that it was ‘the start of the first day of the rest of [her] life.’Since her surgery, she has stuck to working out and eating a good diet. Heather said that she originally started out walking at her local YMCA and then graduated to water aerobics. Heather also said that when she first started to lose the weight, she couldn’t work out because her body was in so much pain. She said she slowly reduced the junk food and cut out the soda at first.

Heather explained how she changed her eating habits and how she hopes to inspire others to go on a life-altering journey like hers. She said: ‘I think that’s one thing that has really helped me with my weight loss journey is finding different/healthy ways to eat the things I used to love. I hope to inspire others in their own journeys and just know that you’re not alone! That the impossible is possible, no matter how out of reach it seems in that moment.’

On her Facebook, Heather happily displays her transformation photos where she lost more than 230 pounds in two years. It was on May 29 when Heather uploaded a Memorial Day photo that featured a picture of her in 2016 and a picture of her in 2018. The two pictures illustrate the giant weight loss and fitness journey that Heather went through and she wrote: ‘never did I think I would weigh 125lbs as of today! I’ve lost 231lbs total including the 20 I lost on my own right before surgery … I’m no longer a borderline diabetic, have hypertension, or sleep apnea and eventually I’ll be able to start my family one day.’

An Actress Lived For Decades In This New York City Apartment—For $28 A Month

Even though New York City is expensive to live in, one actress was able to rent a two-bedroom apartment in the Greenwich Village for only $28 a month for decades.

This actress was named Patricia O’Grady. She moved to New Y0rk City in 1955 with the dream of becoming an actress. When she and her friends arrived in the city, they didn’t know where they were going to stay. When they began their apartment hunt they stumbled upon a 2-bedroom apartment on the top floor of a four-story, mixed-use commercial building, and took it. O’Grady and her friends at the time got a sweet deal on the apartment. They were only paying $16 a month as long as they helped out with sweeping the hallways and making sure the building was kept clean.

This Greenwich Village apartment is where O’Grady stayed even after all of her friends moved out. She lived in that apartment building until she died in March of this year at the age of 84. O’Grady was walking near her home on March 12 when she was struck and killed by a car. She ended up living in her 2-bedroom apartment for just over 60 years and her rent never raised above $28 a month.

O’Grady’s latest landlord was Adam Pomerantz and he said to CNN that when he took over the building he was shocked to hear that one of the tenants was paying such low rent. The rent O’Grady was paying is especially surprising for the Greenwich Village area, which usually has a rental range from about $5,000-$7,000 for a 2-bedroom apartment, according to downtown Manhattan realtor Gary Nurenberg.

The previous owner of the building passed away years ago and when Pomerantz asked the executor of the building why O’Grady was paying such low rent, he told him it was because the previous owner liked her so much. When Pomerantz bought the property where O’Grady was paying $26.45 a month in rent, he looked into whether he was able to raise her rent or not. When he contacted his lawyer he found out that due to rent-stabilization laws he was only legally allowed to raise her rent by $1.98.

Pomerantz ended up asking O’Grady if she would move out of the building and she politely declined. So he did what he was legally allowed to do and that was to raise her rent by $1.98. He was able to increase her rent every year but told CNN he chose not to because the two became friends. O’Grady was living in the apartment and had no heat or hot water. “She would tell me, ‘I’m not worthy of these repairs and these improvements. I don’t pay enough in rent to warrant this…I’m perfectly fine keeping it as it is,’” Pomerantz said to CNN. Pomerantz stated that the apartment will be put through a full renovation before it’s put back on the market. He said that when he puts the apartment up for rent again he will be asking around $5,000 a month for it.

According to O’Grady’s obituary in the New York Times, she had a successful career as an actress in New York City. Most of her work was done in off-Broadway plays but she did perform on Broadway in Macbeth. She appeared in soap operas such as As The World Turns, and films such as Taxi Driver. She was also a finalist to the prestigious Actors Studio and was accepted into Uta Hagen’s acting class.
